The Department of Mechanical Engineering Science was created and placed in the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences in 1957. Previously, Mechanical Engineering Science was a field of study within the Department of Engineering Sciences. In 1973 the department was moved to the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology. The Department Chairs were Leland K. Baxter (1957-1960), John M. Simonsen (1960-1962 and 1968-1973), John N. Cannon (1962-1966), Milton G. Wille (1966-1968), and John M. Simonsen (1973-1977). In 1977 the department was renamed the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Functions

To provide a broad and comprehensive training in mechanical engineering, in addition to the general and religious education provided at Brigham Young University. By 1973 the department offered a professional engineering program at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels. The curriculum was fully accredited by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD).

The department was administered by the department chair, under the direction of the college dean. The department was within the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences (1957-1973) and the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology (1973-1977).
