The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1977 in a renaming of the Department of Mechanical Engineering Science, and placed in the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology. In 1984 the department was retained in the newly renamed College of Engineering and Technology. Department chairs included Blaine W. Andersen (1978-1982), Joseph C. Free (1982-1992), and Geoffrey J. Germane (1992- ). In 2004 the department was retained in the newly renamed Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology.

Functions

To provide courses in applied science that deal with the analysis, design, development, fabrication, and application of products that are predominately mechanical. By its very nature, mechanical engineering includes many varieties of specialization. All students are provided with a central core of engineering fundamentals.

The department was administered by a department chair, under direction of the college dean. The department was incorporated in the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology (1977-1984) and the College of Engineering and Technology (1984-2004).
