The Department of Mechanic Arts was established under the College of Applied Science in 1922 as part of a reorganization of the Department of Mechanics. In 1932 the department absorbed the Department of Drafting. Then in 1948 the department was renamed as the Department of Industrial Arts. Department chairmen included William H. Snell (1923-1935), George H. Havsen (1936), and William H. Snell (1937-1948).
