The Department of Linguistics was renamed the Department of Linguistics and ESL in 1983. Department Chairmen included: Rey L. Baird (1983-1984), Melvin J. Luthy (1984-1985), and Harold S. Madsen (1985-1989).

Functions

The Department of Linguistics was responsible for the following degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics; Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics; Master of Arts in Theoretical Linguistics; Graduate TESL Certificate; and Master of Arts in TESL. The department was also responsible for the following academic programs: Linguistics, Teaching English as a Second Language, American Indian Languages, Central and South American Indian Languages, Austronesian Languages, Welsh, and American Sign Language.
