The Department of Languages was established in 1957, as part of the renaming of the Department of Modern and Classical Languages. The department remained under the direction of the College of Humanities and Social Science until 1965, when it was transferred to the newly formed College of Humanities. In 1968 the department was split into a number of language-specific departments, including the Department of Classical and Asian Languages, the Department of French and Italian, the Department of German and Slavic Languages, and the Department of Spanish and Portuguese. Department chairs of the Department of Languages included included Arthur R. Watkins (1957), Harold W. Lee (1958-1959), H. Darrell Taylor (1960-1963), and R. Max Rogers (1964-1968).

Functions
The Department of Languages provided language training in a number of languages including: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Linguistics, and Semitic languages such as Aramaic, Akkadian, Egyptian, Syriac, and Ugaritic. The department prepared students for teaching, domestic and foreign government positions, international trade, L.D.S. missions, and research leading to advanced degrees.

The department was administered by a department chairmen, under the direction of the college dean. The department was associated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences between 1957 and 1965, and with the College of Humanities between 1965 and 1968.
