The Department of Ironwork provided courses in Ironwork for those studying Mechanic Arts. These courses had been offered since the beginning of BYU as part of different departments.

The Department of Ironwork functioned under the college dean of the College of Applied Science. Courses in Ironwork were offered in different departments since the beginning of BYU, namely the Department of Trades, the Department of Correlated Arts, and the Department of Mechanics.
