The Department of Interior Environment was placed in the College of Family Living in 1975. It was previously the Department of Interior Design. The Department Chairs were: Robert Edgar Dansie (1975-1978) and John W. Siperd (1978-1981). In 1981 the department was merged into the newly formed Department of Design.

Functions
To create homes that are fully responsive to the finest expressions of family life. Curriculum has been prepared with three objectives in mind: 1) To prepare each student to create, with competence, interior home environments in which family members may live and function at their highest level. 2) To prepare the student to enter graduate school. 3) To give the student, through academic and practical training, an adequate background to qualify for employment in the field of interior design as an assistant to an interior designer.
