In 1955, the Department of Personnel and Guidance was renamed the Department of Educational Research and Services, while maintaining its position in the College of Education. It also took on some of the coursework from the recently dissolved Department of Education.  The department's coursework aimed to accomplish two goals: first, to instruct educators in human behavior and learning theory for both regular and gifted students, and second, to promote research and offer more educational services to both the University and area public schools.  In 1962, the department was absorbed by the newly created Graduate Department of Education.
