It was a combining of two former departments: the Department of Classical, Biblical, and Middle Eastern Languages and the Department of Humanities and Comparative Literature. Department Chairmen included: Todd A. Britsch (1978-1979), Larry H. Peer (1979-1980), George S. Tate (1982-1983), Thomas G. Plummer (1988-1989), Larry V. Shumway (1990-1991), (John F. Hall (1993-1994), George S. Tate (1997-1998), Roger T. Macfarlane (2001-2002), V. Stanley Benfell (2004-2005), and Michael J. Call (2007-2008).
