The Department of Horticulture was established by the College of Applied Science in 1922. Department chairmen included: Melvin C. Merrill (1922-1925), Laval S. Morris (1930-1932), Seth L. Shaw (1933-1935), Laval S. Morris (1936), and Seth L. Shaw (1937-1940).

Functions

The Department of Horticulture included courses on principles of orcharding, practical orchard operations, home and commercial gardening, practical garden operations, insects affecting fruit and vegetable crops, methods of plant propagation, plant materials for home beautification, small fruits, fundamentals of plant reproduction, landscape design, origin and history of cultivated plants, systematic pomology, principles of horticulture, chemistry of horticultural products, and breeding of horticultural plants.
