The Department of Homemaking Education was formed within the College of Family Living in 1966 when the Department of Family Life Education was renamed. It was then renamed in 1968 and known as the Department of Home Economics Education. The chair during this time was Virginia B. Poulson.

The department offered a composite major, as its end goal was to prepare students to teach home economics in secondary schools. Therefore, a BS in home economics was awarded to graduates, along with a teaching certificate from the State Department of Public Instruction.
