The Department of History and Philosophy of Religion was established in 1959 in a reorganization of the earlier departments of Church History and Theology and Philosophy. It existed under the College of Religious Instruction from 1959 to 1964. In 1964 it was merged with the other departments in the college to form the departments of Undergraduate Studies in Religious Instruction and Graduate Studies in Religious Instruction. Truman G. Madsen served as chairman.
