Brigham Young University. Dept. of Graduate Studies in Religious Instruction

The Department of Graduate Studies in Religious Instruction was established in 1964 through a merger of the graduate education components of the existing departments within the College of Religious Instruction. Merged departments included Bible and Modern Scripture, Biblical Languages, L.D.S. Theology, Church Organization and Administration, History and Philosophy of Religion, and Religious Education.The department was part of the College of Religious Instruction from 1964 to 1969. Chauncey C. Riddle served as chairman during this time. In 1969 the department was divided into two new departments: the Department of Ancient Scripture and the Department of Church History and Doctrine.

Functions

The Department of Graduate Studies in Religious Instruction had three programs which offered both master's and doctor's degrees. These programs were Bible and Modern Scripture, History of Religion, and Religious Education. Courses offered in these programs included L.D.S. Theology, History of the Papacy, and Studies in the Hebrew Old Testament.
