The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages was established in 1968 after the dissolution of the Department of Languages. R. Max Rogers served as the department chair 1968 to 1970 and Arthur R. Watkins served as the department chair from 1970 to 1972. In 1972 the department was split to form the departments of Germanic Languages and Asian and Slavic Languages. In 1982, this department was reinstated under the Associate Dean Garold Neil Davis.

Functions
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages offered the Bachelor of Arts degree in German and Russian. The Master of Arts degree and the Doctor of Philosophy degree are offered in German. Other language courses offered by the department included Danish, Dutch, Norwegian, and Swedish.
