The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages was established in 1982 after the dissolution of the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages. Department chairmen included: Hans-Wilhelm Kelling (1982-1983), Marvin H. Folsom (1984-1985), Gary L. Browning (1988-1989), Garold N. Davis (1991-1992), Alan F. Keele (1993-1994), Gary L. Browning (1999-2000), Donald K. Jarvis (2002-2003), and David Hart (2005-2006).

Functions
The Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages offers undergraduate degrees in German, German Teaching, Russian, and Russian Teaching. A Master of Arts degree is also offered in German. The department is also responsible for the teaching of the following languages: German, Russian, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, Swedish, Afrikaans, and Dutch.
