The Department of Germanic Languages was organized in 1972 from the earlier Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages. Department chairmen included: Arthur R. Watkins (1972-1973), Garold N. Davis (1975-1976), and Hans-Wilhelm Kelling (1978-1979)

Functions

The Department of Germanic Languages offers instruction in the following languages: Danish, Dutch, German, Norwegian, and Swedish. The Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees were only available in German. By 1979, curriculum had expanded to include: Finish, Icelandic, and Afrikaans. A Bachelor of Arts in German Teaching was also added.
