The Department of Germanic Languages was organized in 1972 from the earlier Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages. Department chairmen included: Arthur R. Watkins (1972-1973), Garold N. Davis (1975-1976), and Hans-Wilhelm Kelling (1978-1979)In 1982 this department merged with the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages and became the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages.

Functions
The Department of Germanic Languages offers instruction in the following languages: Danish, Dutch, German, Norwegian, and Swedish. The Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees were only available in German. By 1979, curriculum had expanded to include: Finish, Icelandic, and Afrikaans. A Bachelor of Arts in German Teaching was also added.
