The Department of Geology was created and placed in the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences in 1968. Previously, it was known as the Department of Geology and Geological Engineering Science. In 2006 the department was called the Department of Geological Sciences. The Department Chairs were: Lehi F. Hintze (1968-1970); W. Revell Phillips (1973-1975); Morris S. Petersen (1975-1983); Dana T. Griffin (1991-1997); Bart J. Kowallis (1997-2003); and Jeffrey D. Keith (2003-2006).

Functions
To offer curriculum in the area of Geology which offers an unusually wide variety of attractive career possibilities to students whose interests lie within the physical or life sciences. A graduate in geology may anticipate a position, with better-than-average pay, in a minerals industry, university, or some governmental agency. The Department of Geology offers bachelor degrees in earth science, geology, and geological engineering.
