The Department of General Studies was established under the College of General Studies in 1977. Starting in 1979 the department was part of the Nonmajors Programs and was until both were abolished in 1992. The following individuals served as chairmen and coordinators: Wayne R. Herlin (1977-1986), Clyde E. Sullivan (1986-1990), and David M. Sorenson (1990-1992).

Functions
The Department of General Studies functioned to assist students in planning their academic career that will most likely ensure success. Students can either be those that need guidance in effective studying and other skills or those with an open major. The courses offered by the department include Remedial Spelling, Effective Study and Adjustment to College, College Developmental Reading, and Reference Groups.
