The Department of French and Italian was created in 1968 after the Department of Languages was disbanded. Department chairmen included: Thomas H. Brown (1968-1970), John Green (1970-1972), Norman C. Turner (1972-1973), Thomas H. Brown (1978-1979), L. Gary Lambert (1984-1985), Madison U. Sowell (1990-1991), Cinzia B. Noble (1999-2000), and Yvon LeBras (2005-2006).
