The Department of French and Italian was created in 1968 after the Department of Languages was disbanded. Department chairmen included: Thomas H. Brown (1968-1970), John Green (1970-1972), Norman C. Turner (1972-1978), Thomas H. Brown (1978-1984), L. Gary Lambert (1984-1990), Madison U. Sowell (1990-1999), Cinzia B. Noble (1999-2005), Yvon LeBras (2005-2009), and Corry Cropper (2009-2018, and Daryl P. Lee (2018- ).

The Department of French and Italian offered a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and a minor in Italian. By 1980, the department offered a major and minor in both French and Italian and a major and minor in French teaching. A Masters of Arts degree in French was also offered.
