The Dept. of Foreign Language was a part of the Church Teachers College until the college was split in 1920. The department was placed under the direction of the School of Arts and Sciences. The department was abolished in 1921 when the School of Arts and Sciences was renamed the College of Arts and Sciences. Benjamin F. Cummings was the chairman of the Dept. of Foreign Language.

The Dept. of Modern Languages and Latin includes classes of: French elementary, French intermediate, French advanced, teaching of French, general survey of French literature, French history as related to literature, French literature of 19th century, modern French novel, Moliere and the French comedy, Spanish elementary, Spanish intermediate, and Spanish advanced.
