The Department of Family and Local History was organized in 1978 under the College of Social Sciences. The main focus of the department was to educate in genealogical research. Vestal Ben Bloxham (1978-1983), David H. Pratt (1983-1984) and Blair R. Holmes (1984-1985) served as coordinators.

Functions
The Department of Family and Local History largely focused on genealogical instruction. The department provided training and practical research for individuals who wanted to do their own genealogy or to help others. Credit and noncredit courses instructed in introductory work, regional genealogy, seminars in applied research and special problems, and the LDS priesthood genealogy program. Courses offered in the department included Basic Genealogical Research, Paleography, and Travel Studies.
