The Department of Family Sciences was placed in the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences in 1982. The Department Chairs were: Kay P. Edwards (1982-1984); Robert F. Stahmann (1984-1990); Terrance D. Olson (1990-1996); James M. Harper (1996-1999).

Functions
The primary objectives of the Department of Family Sciences are: 1) to educate students in depth for occupational careers that involve working with children, individuals, and families in meeting their developmental, behavioral, relationship, financial, and consumption needs; and 2) to help students develop skills in working with children and families, problem-solving, and resource management.

The Department of Family Sciences was a department within the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences. The Department Chair was under the direction of the Dean of the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences.
