The Department of Engineering Sciences was established in 1953 within the College of Arts and Sciences. It remained as such until the 1957-58 academic year when it was divided into five different departments, namely: Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Science; Civil Engineering Science; Geology and Geological Engineering Science; and Mechanical Engineering. Harvey Fletcher was the Department Chairman from 1953 to 1955 and Jens J. Jonsson was Department Chairman from 1955 to 1957.
