The Department of Special Courses and Conferences was established in 1966 and was part of the Division of Continuing Education. In 1979 it became the Department of Conferences and Workshops. Those who served as chairmen of the department were:  Thomas A. James (1966-1970), Sterling R. Church (1972-1973), and Phillip D. Harris (1973-1979).

Previously, it was known as the Department of Special Courses and Conferences. Those who served as directors of the department were: Bert Gividen (1981-1989), R. Organized to fulfill the academic needs of people from many different age groups and diverse educational backgrounds, provides flexible and varied programs, both credit and noncredit, on the BYU campus and throughout Utah County.
