Those who served as chairmen of the department were:  Thomas A. James (1966-1970), Sterling R. Church (1972-1973), and Phillip D. Harris (1973-1979).

Previously, it was known as the Department of Special Courses and Conferences. Those who served as directors of the department were: Bert Gividen (1981-1989), R. Organized to fulfill the academic needs of people from many different age groups and diverse educational backgrounds, provides flexible and varied programs, both credit and noncredit, on the BYU campus and throughout Utah County.
