The Department of Clothing and Textiles was placed in the College of Family Living in 1955. Previously it was a division within the Department of Home Economics. The Department Chairs were: Eleanor Jorgenson (Acting Chair 1955-56 and Chair 1959-1961, 1966-1974); Margaret Schow Potter (1956-1959; 1961-1966); Charlene Lind (1974-1981). The College of Family Living was renamed the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences in 1981 and the Department of Clothing and Textiles was part of that college.

Functions

The curriculum of the Dept. of Clothing and Textiles is designed to help the student understand clothing as it relates to the needs of individuals and families and to provide training in the apparel and textile industries. Considerations are given to the satisfaction of desires to express creative abilities; the understanding of fabrics, their selection, use and care; economy; and the comfort and health of the body. The curriculum offers experience in clothing selection, buying, design, and construction; the identification and quality of textiles; and an appreciation for the history of costume and textiles.

The Department of Clothing and Textiles was a department within the College of Family Living. The Department Chair was under the direction of the Dean of the College of Family Living.
