The Department of Classical and Asian Languages was created after the dissolution of the Department of Languages in 1968. J. Ruben Clark, III served as department chair from 1968 to 1972. In 1972 the department was split into the Department of Classical, Biblical, and Middle Eastern Languages and the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages.
