The Department of Classical, Biblical, and Middle Eastern Languages was created in 1972 out of the previous Department of Classical and Asian Languages. In 1978 the department was split, with portions of the faculty moving to the Department of Humanities, Classics, and Comparative Literature and to the Department of Linguistics and Special Languages.
