The Department of Civil Engineering Science was placed in the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology in 1973. Previously, it was in the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences. In 1978 the name of the department was changed from Civil Engineering Science to Civil Engineering. The Department Chair was James R. Barton (1973-1978).

Functions

To provide a broad training in all basic aspects of civil and structural engineering. Qualifications obtainable are applicable in such closely related technical fields as applied mechanics, architectural engineering, etc. Also to offer professional programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Ph.D. The curriculum is accredited by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD) as a professional engineering curriculum.

The Department of Civil Engineering Science was directly managed by a Department Chair who was under the direction of the College Dean.
