The Department of Civil Engineering Science was created and placed in the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences in 1957. Previously, Civil Engineering Science was a field of study within the Department of Engineering Sciences. In 1973 it was placed in the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology as the Department of Civil Engineering Science.  The Department Chairs were Harry Hodson (1957-1959), Dean K. Fuhriman (1959-1961), Ralph L. Rollins (1960-1962), Cliff S. Barton (1962-1970), D. Allan Firmage (1970-1973), James R. Barton (1974-1978). In 1978 the department was known as the Department of Civil Engineering.

The Department of Civil Engineering Science was established in 1957 in the division of the earlier Department of Engineering Sciences. At the time of its establishment it was part of the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences, and in 1973 was moved to the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology. In 1978 the name of the department was changed from Civil Engineering Science to Civil Engineering. The Department Chair was James R. Barton (1973-1978).

Functions

To provide a broad training in all basic aspects of civil and structural engineering. Qualifications obtainable are applicable in such closely related technical fields as applied mechanics, architectural engineering, etc. Also to offer professional programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science in civil engineering, Master of Engineering, Master of Science, and Ph.D. The curriculum is accredited by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD) as a professional engineering curriculum.
