Brigham Young University. Dept. of Child Development and Family Relationships

The Department of Child Development and Family Relationships was introduced to the College of Family Living in 1966. The name of the College of Family Living was changed to the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences in 1981 and the Department of Child Development and Family Relationships was part of that college. The Department Chairs included Duane M. Laws (1966-1970), J. Joel Moss (1970-1980), and D. Eugene Mead (1980-1982). In 1982 the department was divided and merged into the Department of Family Sciences and the Family Living Center.

Functions

To emphasize two areas of knowledge: child development and family relations. In the child development area, the basic developmental and behavioral characteristics of the child are studied from conception to adulthood. In the family relations area, students gain knowledge and insight concerning dating, courtship, marriage, and family behavior throughout the family life cycle. Courses are also selected from other departments in order to enrich and broaden the student's understanding of human development.
