The Department of Chemistry was established and made a department within the School of Arts and Sciences in 1920 when the Church Teachers College was split. Functions
1) to be of service to other departments of the University by offering courses in general education for all students and additional fundamental background training for majors in physical and engineering sciences, biological and agricultural sciences, nursing, family living, pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, and other areas. 2) to provide sound, thorough training in chemistry for students choosing to major in this area. 3) to contribute significantly to the sum of basic research in chemistry being carried out in the universities of the world.
