The Department of Chemical Engineering Science was created and placed in the College of Physical and Engineering Science in 1958. Previously it was part of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering within the College of Physical and Engineering Science. The Department Chairs were: Billings Brown (1958-1960), James J. Christensen (1960-1961), Dee H. Barker (1961-1966), Bill J. Pope (1966-1972), and L. Douglas Smoot (1972-1973).

The Department of Chemical Engineering Science was a department within the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences. The Department Chairs were: Billings Brown (1958-1960), James J. Christensen (1960-1961), Dee H. Barker (1961-1966), Bill J. Pope (1966-1972), and L. Douglas Smoot (1972-1973). The Department Chair was under the direction of the Dean in the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences. In the 1973-1974 academic year, the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology was formed and Chemical Engineering Science was placed within that college.
