The Department of Chemical Engineering was established in 1977 in a renaming of the Department of Chemical Engineering Science, and placed in the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology. Previously it was within the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences. In 1984 the college was renamed the College of Engineering and Technology and the Department of Chemical Engineering remained within that college. Then in 2004 the college was renamed the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology. Department chairs included Dee H. Barker (1978-1979), Richard W. Hanks (1979-1985), Douglas N. Bennion (1985-1991), Richard L. Functions

To offer professional training leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Master of Science (M.S.), Master of Engineering (M.E.), and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). The curriculum is accredited by the Engineers' Council for Professional Development and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The department also provides training leading to the two-year Associate of Science degree as a chemical-engineering technician.
