Brigham Young University. Dept. of Business Education and Office Management

The Department of Business Education and Office Management was created with two general purposes in mind: to prepare those planning on teaching business subjects at the high school level and to train executive secretaries in office skills and management techniques. The creation of this dually purposed department was in response to the increasing demand for graduates in the business field. Established in 1956 it was headed by the following chairmen: Lars G. Crandall in 1956, Edward L. Christensen from 1957 to 1958, again by Lars G. Crandall in 1959, again by Edward L. Christensen in 1960 and finally by Richard D. Bell from 1961 to 1963.

Functions

The Department of Business Education and Office Management was responsible for the teaching of courses on the classes of basic classroom procedures, secondary curriculum and participation, secondary student teaching, fundamentals of business education. It was also responsible for the teaching of courses that focused on general office management including the classes of calculating machines, basic office procedures, machine accounting, records control and office machines, directed office experience, office management, business English, business report writing, beginning shorthand, shorthand dictation, intermediate shorthand, applied stenography, fundamentals of typewriting, intermediate typewriting, production typewriting, secretarial and statistical typewriting, transcription, advanced transcription and speed-building, expert shorthand, advanced expert shorthand and introduction to court reporting.
