The Department of Biology Teaching was established in 1985 in the College of Biology and Agriculture, and functioned in association with the Department of Secondary Education. Prior to this time, biology was not a department-level program, and was managed directly by the college through a program coordinator. After the department's establishment, it remained under the direction of coordinator Bruce Nephi Smith.
