The Department of Biology was established in 1989 in a renaming of the earlier Department of Biology Teaching. The department was part of the College of Biology and Agriculture, and functioned in association with the Department of Secondary Education. The department was administered by coordinator Richard R. Tolman (1989-1993), and beginning in 1993 under the joint direction of Richard R. Tolman and Don D. Bloxham (1993-2004).
