The department was established in 1940 during the division of the earlier Department of Religious Education, and was part of both the Division of Religion and then the College of Religious Instruction. In 1964 the department was merged with other departments in the college to for the departments of Undergraduate Studies in Religious Instruction and Graduate Studies in Religious Instruction. The following individuals served as department chairmen: Sidney B. Sperry (1941-1953), Roy W. Doxey (1954-1957), Eldin Ricks (1958), Daniel H. Ludlow (1959-1960), and Howard H. Barron (1961-1964).
