The Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages was created in 1982, after the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages was divided. Near Eastern Languages until 1982 had been under the direction of the Department of Linguistics and Special Languages. Department chairmen included: Thomas F. Rogers (1982-1983), Gary S. Williams (1983-1984), Masakazu Watabe (1991-1992), Van C. Gessel (1993-1994), Dilworth B. Parkinson (1998-1999), and Robert A. Russell (2004-2005).

Functions
The Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages was responsible for the following undergraduate degree programs: Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Regular instruction was available in Hebrew, Arabic, and Thai. Based on sufficient demand, the following languages would also be offered: Cantonese, Hindi, Vietnamese, Akkadian, Aramaic, Egyptian, Persian (Farsi), Syriac, Turkish, and Ugaritic.

The department was administered by the department chairman, under the direction of the college dean.
