The Department of Asian and Near Eastern Languages was created in 1982, after the Department of Asian and Slavic Languages was divided. Near Eastern Languages until 1982 had been under the direction of the Department of Linguistics and Special Languages. Department chairmen included: Thomas F. Rogers (1982-1983), Gary S.
