The Copyright Management Office was first established in 1999. Then in 2002, it was renamed as the Copyright Licensing Office. Carl M. Johnson has served as the director of the Copyright Management Office since its establishment.

Functions
The Copyright Management Office was established to regulate university compliance with existing copyright law thereby reducing liability due to infringement, and assist in the delivery of digital materials to the rest of the campus community. The Copyright Management Office also established a copyright education program, and created a University copyright policy that could be easily accessed through the Web.
Assets and Administrative Structure
The Copyright Management Office was led by a single director who was assisted by an associate director and staff. It often cooperated with the University's Office of General Counsel.
