Created in 1972, the Institute for Computer Uses in Education resided within the Instructional Services Division and was primarily known for beginning the TICCIT system. With the dissolution of the Division of Learning Resources in 1976, the Institute was reorganized into Computer Teaching Services. The only director of the Institute was Harold Hendricks(1976-1986).

The Institute was responsible for research and theory toward the development of a Design Science Foundation for Education; the development of courseware, software and hardwre to promote more cost effective instruction in high volume undergraduate courses, design automation to facilitate the design and production of high quality courseware, research in human learning and instruction, and the adjunct application of the computer in support of the classroom teacher; service to faculty and studnts who are interested in becoming acquainted with the applicatin of the computer in education; and, most famously, the innovation and management of the TICCIT (Time-shared Interactive Computer Controlled Information Television) system.
