Brigham Young University. Computer Guidance Council

The Computer Guidance Council was created around 1972. Robert J. Smith and J. Robert Driggs served as this council's chairmen. The Council presided over several subcommittees. These were the Computer Administrative Users Committee (circa 1972-1981), the Computer Instructional Users Committee (circa 1972- before 1980), the Computer Technical Committee (circa 1972-1982), the DEC/10 Policy Committee (circa 1980-1982), the IBM 4341 Policy Committee (circa 1980-1982), and the VAX Policy Committee (circa 1980-1982).

Functions

The Computer Guidance Council was created to evaluate and recommend computer policy for the campus as well as review and recommend action on all major computer acquisitions. The function of the subcommittees were as follows: Computer Administrative Users Committee evaluated the needs of administrative user areas and recommend priorities and evaluated administrative computer programs and suggest policy for such programs; the Computer Instructional Users Committee evaluated the needs of instructional users and recommend priorities and evaluated instructional programs that involve computers and suggest policy for such programs; the Computer Technical Committee made technical reviews and recommendations on computer systems proposals; DEC/10 Policy Committee evaluated needs and recommend priorities for uses of the DEC/10 facility and to establish policies for the operation of the DEC/10 operating system; IBM 4341 Policy Committee evaluated needs and recommended priorities for uses of the 4341 computer and then established policies that system; the VAX Policy Committee evaluated need and recommended priorities for the uses of the VAX research facility and then established policies for its operation.

Assets and Administrative Structure

Members of this Council were appointed by the President and responsible to the Executive Vice-President and later the Financial Vice President. The first chairman of this Council was the Associate Academic Vice-President and the second was the Assistant Vice President - Business.
