The Communications Research Center was established in 1977. Directors include: Gordon C. Whiting (1977-1980), R. Wayne Pace (1980-1983), J. Douglas Gibb (1983-1989), R. Irwin Goodman (1989-1996), Joseph D. Straubhaar (1998-1999), Daniel Stout (1999-2005), Steven Thomsen (2005-2008), Mark Callister (2008-).

The Communications Research Center provides logistical and technical assistance for major research projects. The Center includes computer work stations and facilities for data collection and analysis. The Center, in the past, had been a resource largely for graduate students studying broadcasting, journalism, advertising, public relations, and speech communications.

The Center is overseen by a director who reported to the head of the Department of Communications.
