The Collegiate Department was established in 1903 at the time the university was organized. The department was reorganized as the College in 1904.

Functions: The department was responsible for teaching college-level courses in theology, English, history, mathematics, natural science, pedagogy, Spanish, physical science, music, gymnasium, domestic art, drawing, drafting, and woodwork.
Assets and Administrative Structure: The department was managed by a principal. John C. Swensen served in this position between 1903 and 1904.
