The College of Physical and Engineering Sciences was established in 1954 within Brigham Young University when the College of Arts and Sciences transferred its departments into three separate colleges. The college continued under its name until it split into the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology and the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1973. College deans have included Harvey Fletcher (acting, 1954-1955; dean, 1955-1958) and Armin J. Hill (1958-1973).

Description

Established: 1954

Abolished: 1973

Location: Provo, Utah (1954-1973)

Functions

The College of Physical and Engineering Sciences was originally organized to bring together education of engineering and the fundamental physical sciences as well as to provide training for students pursuing careers in teaching, industrial work, or fundamental research.

Assets and Administrative Structure

The College of Physical and Engineering Sciences was the administering body for the following departments: Air Science, Chemistry, Engineering Sciences, Geology and Geography, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Geology and Geological Engineering, Civil Engineering Science, Electrical Engineering Science, Mechanical Engineering Science, Geology and Geological Engineering Science, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Science, Chemical Engineering Science, Aerospace Studies, Geology, Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy. The college was administered by a dean under the direction of the president of the university. The Department of Air Science and the Department of Aerospace Studies were under the direct supervision of regular officers of the United States Air Force.
