The College of Physical and Engineering Sciences, previously part of the College of Arts and Sciences, was established within Brigham Young University in 1954 until it split into the College of Engineering Sciences and Technology and the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1973. Between 1954 and 1973 the college was under the direction of deans Harvey Fletcher and Armin J. Hill.

The College of Physical and Engineering Sciences was originally organized to bring together education of engineering and the fundamental physical sciences as well as to provide training for students pursuing careers in teaching, industrial work, or fundamental research.
