The College of General Studies was established when the General College was reorganized and its name was changed. In addition to keeping several of the departments, the reorganized college experienced the addition of several new departments. C. Terry Warner served as dean of the college.

Functions
The College of General Studies was created to alleviate concerns about the condition of the existing effort placed on general education. It existed to aid students in making more informed career decisions. In addition to the departments of American Indian Education, Career Education, and General Education, the newly organized college experienced the addition of the Honors Program, the Philosophy Department, and Brigham Young University's two ROTC units. Students with an undeclared major were put into the College of General Studies.
