The College of Fine Arts, previously a part of the College of Arts and Sciences, was established in 1925 and continued in operation under its name until it was established as the College of Fine Arts and Communications in 1964. Between 1925 and 1964, the college was administered by deans Garrit de Jong, Jr. and Conan E. Mathews.

The College of Fine Arts was originally organized to provide greater opportunities for students with talents in the fine arts field.
